O.M. #2

Hello! I really honestly can't believe we didn't make it to State! Everyone thought are skit was great even our competitors thought we were going to make it for sure!!! :-( We got 4th and needed to get 3rd to advance. Heart breaker.

My team consisted of: me, Aidan, Ashley, Lou Lou, Marcos, and Abi. Ashley could not make it to competition because she was in Disneyland cheerleading the same day.

We missed the fact that the treasure had to be made before 1900 A.D. Ours was made in 1963. We didn't quite make the cut off so we were penalized.

The problem was to make a 8 min. skit that portrayed a modern man made treasure and a historic man made treasure. The Modern treasure was found in the future and is a sculpture or a structure of some sort. Ours was the Apollo 11 Flag. You're probably thinking that a flag is not a structure. It's not. So what we did is we had an alien that had a house and we put it on that. Our historic treasure was the Fallen Astronauts sculpture. That's what did not work, It was made in 1963 and had to be made before 1900A.D.

Our Spont. scores (spontaneous) were 57.6 out of 100. Spont either makes you or breaks you. It definitely broke us.

We had to make a bridge that spanned about 1 foot. It had to hold as many items as you can. We had 3 min. to make the bridge and test it and 1 min, to put the items on.

The items we had to make the bridge were: 4 Q-tips, 2 pipe cleaners, 2 straws, 1 Styrofoam cup, 10 tooth-picks, and two pieces of painters tape.
The items we could put on the bridge were: 10 marbles, 6 wooden sticks, 4 pennies, 15 nails, 4 quarters, 3 golf balls, and 4 ping-pong balls.
What we did was: we put the cup in the middle and stuck the 2 pipe cleaners on each side the pipe cleaners had straws on them to make it less bendy. We taped the pipe cleaners to each side of the table.

Our team had stuck nails on the sides of the cup and got all , but 2 nails. We got all the marbles and all the pennies and 1 quarter remained.

What would you would have done?

Only 1 out 4 groups made it to state.

I had a great time and am definitely going to do it next year!

Thanks for reading,
SJ

  1. Hi SJ,
I know you were disappointed with the final decision regarding OM....but I think you learned more about team work, reading a problem and organizing an answer than you did last year...which is a victory in the long run. I am proud of you.

How about the Spelling Bee...I think a blog is in order. Heart, Mom
